Walker Handbook - Best Practices for Good Dog Walkers

General

  • Love the pets we get to visit!

  • Read the client notes for a reminder of the specifics of each pet/visit/home.

In the Home

  • Be respectful of the trust that clients place in us to be in their home; don’t enter spaces unless it is relevant for the care of the pet.

  • Act as if each home has a camera watching/recording you, because many do! Focus your attention and words on the pet.

  • Leave doors as you found them. If a door is locked when you arrive, make sure it is locked when you leave!

In the Car

  • Have leash control of the dog(s) every time the car door is open.

  • For example, do not open the back door and then reach for the leash. Rather, hold the leash then open the front door and bring the dog through the front door with you.

On the Walk

  • Use a waist leash and harness whenever possible.

  • Pick routes that include green space and shade.

  • Avoid busy roads, road crossings, and dog parks (unless the owner specifically requests visits to the dog park).

  • When passing another dog, 1) create a ‘body block’ by positioning your dog on the outside edge of the path & 2) gain ‘short leash’ control where you hold the leash tout a short distance from its connection point to the harness or collar.

  • Be aware of your surroundings, the outside temperature, and the behavior of your dog.

  • Have fun and interact with the pets!
